Forensic science and crime laboratories have come under attack in recent years much like other aspects law enforcement.

Reports from entities such as the National Academy of Sciences and the Presidents Council of Advisors on Science and Technology have criticized forensic disciplines for lacking valid scientific foundations. Additionally, high profile scandals involving unethical laboratory scientists have received ample media attention.

Furthermore, with backlogs continually increasing and resources dwindling, crime laboratories are under tremendous pressure.

Law enforcement executives who are in charge of or use forensic services must understand the intensifying scrutiny on this important intelligence resource and how laboratories are managing the risk.
