The term “procedural justice” has been a buzz word used by criminal justice policy makers for more than a decade. They suggest that procedural justice has a significant impact on citizen compliance with government authority and public support for the police – and it does. Unfortunately, most people discussing procedural justice do a poor job of explaining it, using unclear definitions such as, “Procedural justice is the idea of fairness in the processes that resolve disputes and allocate resources in the administration of justice and legal proceedings.” This webinar will explain the concept of procedural justice in a common sense manner, discuss the research that reveals the powerful effect procedural justice has on people’s attitudes toward the police, and give practical advice to help officers ensure that they are acting in a procedurally just manner when interacting with members of the public.
