Law enforcement is a high risk, high liability profession. But while a pro-active law enforcement agency leader cannot eliminate all liability, it can and should be managed. The decisions that risk some degree of legal liability should be made ethically and intentionally, rather than through negligence or lack of vigilance. And this conversation about liability should not be limited to legal issues alone but extended to a call for enhancing agency operations through better leadership, ethical policing, and enhancing public trust.
