In the wake of the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in August of 2014, and the subsequent civil unrest, law enforcement agencies across the country began equipping their officers with body-worn cameras. Many elected officials, community activists, and media commentators asserted that the cameras would make officers’ actions subject to greater scrutiny and accountability. Many law enforcement leaders hoped that the cameras would improve public trust.

10 years later, Attorney Matt Dolan will discuss the lessons learned after a decade of body-worn camera deployment that has impacted thousands of law enforcement agencies and the communities that they serve. This discussion will place a particular emphasis on looking back to the stated goals of body-worn cameras, the promises made, and the unexpected consequences of their deployment a decade later.

During this two-hour webinar discussion, lessons learned will include:

  • Understanding the extent to which “confirmation bias” limits the power of evidence that is contrary to a dominant narrative of police brutality
  • Identifying opportunities to catch cops doing something right with the help of body-worn camera footage
  • Utilizing body-worn camera footage as a training and re-training tool for officers to save careers
  • Utilizing body-worn camera footage as an evidentiary asset in prosecuting crimes in court
  • Leveraging body-worn camera footage as a means of stream-lining internal affairs investigations
  • Using body-worn camera footage to minimize civil unrest in emergency cases
