Dan has more than 33 years of law enforcement experience and retired after 30 years with the Grand Rapids Police Department. He served as the Training Bureau Commander for 20 years, and previously held Sergeant (Team Leader) on the Department’s full-time SWAT and Street Crimes Unit. Additional assignments included Detective Unit Fugitive Apprehension Team, Patrol, Background Investigator, Recruiter, FTO, and Instructor. The vast majority of his career has been dedicated to Tactical Operations, Training, Personnel Development and most notably the development and implementation of dynamic scenario-based training.
Dan has managed: Department Training Functions, Integrated Critical Skills Training, Use of Force Training, Background Investigations, Hiring/Recruiting, Firearms, Subject Control, EVO, Field Training, Intern Program, Supervisory and Command Training. He coordinated forty recruit classes at GRPD. Dan has instructed and is a certified Instructor in numerous topics including Critical Incident Response, Firearms, Taser, MFF Field Force, Chemical Munitions, Less-Lethal, Use of Force, Integrated Tactical Response, Officer Involved Shooting Protocols, Field Interrogations, Field Training Officer, Active Shooter, Traffic Stops, SWAT Leadership, Hostage Rescue, Policy and Procedure, and Professional Conduct.
Dan has also worked as a Police Officer with the City of Cedar Springs, Village of Lakeview, and Grand Valley State University. He has served on numerous committees and forums with MCOLES, City of Grand Rapids, and Kent County Metro Area. He was very active in the Risk Management, Civil Litigation and Human Resource functions while serving.
