We watch our partners’ backs to warn them about physical dangers and physically intervene to protect them from those dangers. We would not hesitate to intervene if someone threatens our partner physically. 

But why, then, do we often stand by, acting powerless, when our partner losses his or her composure in a verbal altercation?
